Human Rights Day

December is the month full of celebrations; variety of religious and cultural holidays and parties that make people in general, joyful and high spirited for most part.  Apart from most celebrated Christmas around the world, there are various other events celebrated, like worldwide Candle lighting Day, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, World AIDS month and my favorite Human Rights Day.  While I leave it up to you to talk about other events, I would like to share my thoughts and facts on Human Rights Day in particular.

Human Rights Day is celebrated globally, on 10th. of  December every year.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day in 1950, proclaiming its principles for all nations of the world to have common standard of achievement for their people.  This year is of significant importance as Human Rights Day continues the celebration of it's 20th anniversary since it's establishment by UN High Commissioner, with an emphasis on the future and identifying unseen challenges lies ahead.
Special events will be held all around the world but more significant events will be held on 5th. of December in Geneva and 10th. of December in New York, to commemorate this auspicious day.

This year's theme for the 20th anniversary celebration is: WORKING FOR YOUR RIGHTS, and why not.  It is so to the point where everyday in the news we hear and see human rights are being violated; whether it is child forced labor (children rights), or as simple as girl's freedom of getting education (Women's Rights) or Rights of Indigenous people or even Racisim.  And my favorite - Internet and privacy.  It is someone's right being violated EVERYDAY!

I have high respect for the UN HR chief who provided following overview of the declaration and our strive to stand up for human rights.
 "As we continue to strive towards a world that acknowledges the rights of all human beings, the Vienna Declaration and Plan of Action, adopted at the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 1993, still sets the agenda for much of our work. The Declaration, which led to historic advances in the promotion and protection of human rights, is the most significant overarching human rights document produced in the past 40 years.
Overview – UN Human Rights Chief, Navi Pillay"

With this, I leave you to keep doing your part to make this world a better place for our next generation.

Okay, call me lazy in posting my very first official blog on the blogger.com.  I was focusing on to build my website "Chirpy chic" http://www.ameesmihar.com that forced me to start my blogs here as well.
So enough babbling, let me cut to the chase and say what I want to say out of a true inspiration.

Today's news Malala Yousafzai (young Pakistani student activist/victim of Taliban's harsh attack) received EU's Sakharov human rights prize.  This proved one more time that there is always a good outcome of every evil.  We just need to have courage and faith to guide us through.
That reminds me not too long ago I saw her interview on Jon Stewart show which gave me goose bumps of how courageous this young girl is.  During the same time frame I also came across somewhere on internet asking if people will vote for her if she will ever run to be a politician?
Although, this young lady's courage and determination is a real inspiration to all of us, I will not vote for her just because of two reasons.  Calm down, nothing negative about her....
  1. She will need one heck of a security system around her in that country;
  2. When she gets married, her husband will not stand her being in the driving seat, considering the culture. No matter how open minded and educated Asian men are, they just cannot stand their woman to be ahead of them.
Instead I would like her to best utilize her courage and talent to be a motivational speaker/educational person - a better platform for her to bring awareness of  importance of education for women, not just in her homeland but all over the world.  Infant's first teacher is his mother - educate women and world will see great politician.

I will stop here for us to ponder more !!!
